This Week’s Pie Flavor: Humble

Opening Salvo

At the risk of this sounding like one of those “here’s what [insert innocuous thing] has taught me about B2B sales” posts, I’m going to share a moment of pure chaos I experienced this week. On Sunday night, our washing machine flooded parts of our house. If I had to guess, about 15 gallons of water poured out before we managed to get it under control. The issue? A broken water-level sensor that caused the machine to keep filling without draining—until it just stopped draining altogether. Cue my attempts to fix the situation: Googling error codes, checking for external issues, turning the machine’s power off to reset it—nothing worked. Out of one part frustration and two parts desperation (okay, three parts frustration, but let me rock), I cut the fuse in the fuse box and tried opening the drain pump cover to manually let the water out. Then the washer said:

That’s when the washing machine decided to be petty, no, vindictive. Somehow, despite cutting its power, the machine still kept filling. And the change in pressure? That made the front-loading door pop open. Chaos ensued. Picture me trying to hold the door shut while playing bucket brigade with my home’s MVP (my wife), throwing whatever cloth I could find under the door, and scrambling to locate the machine’s plug behind it. The Ls were stacking fast and furiously against yours truly. Mind you, 5-7 minutes have now gone by and finally, my simple-self thinks to shut off the main water valve to the home. Once I did, the tension lifted, but we were left staring at water everywhere. And, because life loves a plot twist, faint dripping sounds from the floor below soon revealed water seeping through the ceiling. Loved that part in particular for us.

So, what’s the point of this overshare? Two things. First, I’m as fallible as anyone, and I think it’s important for people with any sort of platform (cringe to type, but stay with me) to own when things aren’t going perfectly. In that moment, I couldn’t have been further from perfect if I’d tried. Second, ruminating about what happened the next morning, I saw the ordeal as a reminder of the damage caused when we focus our efforts on the wrong thing. Much of what I did to address the issue was right, I just did it grossly out of sequence. Had I shut the water off before trying to find solutions to the error message, I would’ve been able to get the machine drained instead of turning our home into the water feature no one asked for. Symptom vs root cause.

All that to say, in our field of talent management, it’s easy to get caught up in addressing symptoms rather than tackling root causes. This often leads to vicious cycles: wasted budgets, time, trust, confidence—you name it. If there’s anything to gain from this week’s story, let it be a reminder to take inventory of where you’re focusing your efforts. Keep the main thing the main thing, and don’t drown in fighting the symptoms.

Generative AI: The Talent Trend Shaping 2025

Generative AI is transforming talent management, with ADP’s latest report revealing how organizations plan to integrate this technology into their workforce strategies by 2025. The report highlights key areas where AI is making a difference, including recruitment, engagement, and performance management.

How AI is Shaping the Future:

  • Streamlining Recruitment: AI tools are now automating the sourcing of candidates, identifying the best matches from vast talent pools, and reducing time-to-hire by up to 50%.

  • Improving Engagement: AI-driven platforms provide managers with real-time insights into employee sentiment, helping address concerns before they escalate.

  • Personalized Learning and Development: Generative AI is enabling customized career development plans by analyzing skills gaps and recommending targeted training.

However, the rise of AI is not without challenges. Concerns about data privacy and algorithmic bias remain top of mind for HR leaders. Organizations must adopt ethical frameworks to ensure transparency and fairness.

I agree that AI has the potential to revolutionize the workforce, but its success depends on careful implementation. By balancing innovation with ethical considerations, companies can leverage AI to enhance both employee experience and business outcomes.

Talent Management 101 (TM101)

Sabbatical policies are an increasingly popular employee benefit that allows workers to take extended leave from their job, often for personal or professional development. Unlike standard paid time off (PTO), sabbaticals are longer and can last anywhere from a few weeks to a year, depending on the employer’s policy. This practice offers employees the opportunity to recharge, explore new skills, or address significant life goals, all while maintaining their connection to the organization.

Key Features of Sabbatical Policies:

  • Eligibility: Sabbaticals are typically reserved for long-tenured employees, with eligibility requirements ranging from five to 10 years of service. This ensures that the benefit rewards loyalty and dedication.

  • Paid vs. Unpaid Leave: Some companies offer paid sabbaticals, while others provide unpaid leave. Paid sabbaticals are more common in industries prioritizing employee retention and engagement.

  • Purpose of Leave: Employees may use sabbaticals for various reasons, such as pursuing higher education, volunteering, focusing on personal well-being, or traveling. Companies often encourage activities that align with professional growth or corporate values.

Sabbatical policies are mutually beneficial:

  • For Employers: Offering sabbaticals can improve retention, enhance employer branding, and reduce burnout among high-performing employees. Research suggests that workers return more energized and engaged, which boosts overall productivity.

  • For Employees: Sabbaticals provide the time and space for personal growth, allowing individuals to return with fresh perspectives and new skills. The opportunity to take a break without career disruption is highly valued by employees seeking work-life balance.

Challenges to Consider:

While sabbaticals offer significant advantages, implementing a policy requires careful planning. Employers need to:

  • Ensure Coverage: Temporary staffing or role redistribution is essential to maintain operations during an employee’s absence.

  • Set Clear Guidelines: A well-defined policy helps manage expectations for both employees and managers.

  • Measure Impact: Organizations should track the effects of sabbaticals on employee performance and retention to ensure the program’s success.

Sabbatical policies are a powerful tool for fostering loyalty, reducing burnout, and promoting professional growth. By offering this benefit, companies can create a workplace culture that values balance, development, and long-term engagement.
